This intriguing concept is that each artist will give a 45 minute set - they will not likely be sharing the piano stool and dueting, although that is possible but not requested!
In this, the first edition of the series, on Tuesday, July 3, internationally recognized jazz pianist, composer, arranger and bandleader Hilario Duran takes the stage. Duran is a Grammy nominee and multi-JUNO Award winner, and has been referred to by Cuban piano legend Chucho Valdes as “an unparalleled pianist, composer and arranger of the highest order.” The Cuban-Canadian’s most recent album, Contumbao, his 8th release on the prestigious Canadian Jazz label Alma Records, has garnered rave reviews and a 2018 Juno nomination for Best Jazz Album: Solo.
Hilario will be paired with up and comer Jenie Thai, for a night of blues & soul. Jenie Thai has been immersed in music since the age 5. In 2008 she attended Grant MacEwen University’s jazz and contemporary music programme as a performance major. Offered a part-time teaching position at MacEwen, and accepted into Paul McCartney’s music school in Liverpool. She passed on both to get her career going! Jenie will release a new CD this fall, produced by Stu Crookes. There’s a contemporary r&b sound to this, with more than a nod to old-school tradition. Ten new songs, full of heart.
Two very different and exceedingly talented artists.
